Why Run Testing Days?
Testing days are one of the most effective tools in your gym’s toolkit. They give athletes a clear benchmark, create a buzz on the gym floor, and provide a structured reason for members to keep showing up. The HYROX Conditioning Test (HCT) takes this a step further – it’s a standardised, branded assessment that your athletes can compare against HYROX competitors worldwide broken down by movement.
As a Compete affiliate, you already have everything you need to run the HCT. This guide walks you through the practical side: how to set up, how to run smooth heats, what to coach on the day, and how to make the most of the results.
What You Need Before Test Day
Technology
Before running the HYROX Conditioning Test, make sure the following is ready:
• Athlete profiles created in the Output platform before the day. They can be created as a coach on Capture or in bulk on the Output Hub. Follow these steps.
• Output Capture app installed on athletes and coaches phone or tablet.
• In addition, if you’d like to showcase leaderboards and dashboards on screens across your facility, upgrade to Output Sports Advanced tier to have everything set up.
Running a Smooth Test Day
Scheduling Heats
Plan your heats based on equipment availability and assign athletes to a heat based on an interval clock.
Each heat takes approximately 40 minutes to complete all four stations (32 minutes of work plus 2 minute rest intervals). With a new heat starting every 10 minutes, you can overlap heats efficiently:
Heat 1 begins at Station 1.
Ten minutes later, Heat 1 moves to Station 2 and Heat 2 begins at Station 1.
Continue rotating every 10 minutes until all heats are complete.
HCT Tips Guide.docx
For a gym with 4 ergs, running 6 heats of 4 athletes will test 24 athletes in about 90 minutes.
Briefing Athletes
Before the test begins, run a short group briefing covering:
• The four-station format and rest periods.
• Movement standards for each station (especially the burpee broad jump to reverse lunge transition).
• How scoring works – tell them about the Hyrox Score bands so they have a target.
• Remind them to have their 5 km running PB ready.
In cases where testing is on different days or across an entire day, communicate with your athletes before hand.
Hyrox Score Bands
Band | Score Range | Meaning |
Developing | 0 – 25 | Starting the HYROX journey |
Intermediate | 26 – 60 | Building a solid fitness base |
Advanced | 61 – 84 | Strong race readiness |
Elite | 85 – 100 | Top-tier HYROX performance |
Recording Results
Make sure athletes have the Output Capture app ready.
Results should be entered as each athlete finishes a station – do not wait until the end to batch-enter scores, as this increases the risk of errors.
Making the Most of Your Results
Once scores are in, the real value begins. Here are practical ways to use HCT results to drive engagement at your gym:
Celebrate and Share
• Announce top scores on the day – athletes love the recognition and it builds energy in the room.
• Encourage athletes to share their Hyrox Score on social media. The score graphic from Output is designed for exactly this.
• Post a round-up of testing day highlights on your gym’s social channels. Tag @outputsports and @hyroxworld for additional reach.
Identify Weaknesses
The Hyrox Score breaks down performance by movement. Use this to guide athletes towards the progression tracks that you can program for them, defined in the HYROX Performance Hub where they can improve most.
An athlete who scores well on the RowErg but poorly on wall balls, for example, has a clear training focus for the next cycle.
Build a Retest Culture
Testing days should not be a one-off event. Schedule retests every 8–12 weeks so athletes can see how their training is translating into results. Regular retesting creates accountability, keeps members engaged, and gives your coaching team a clear feedback loop.
Going further: Imagine being able to track every athlete’s score history over time, display live leaderboards during test day, and generate visual performance dashboards to share with your members. With Advance, these tools are built right into the Output platform – turning your testing days into an ongoing performance programme.
Note: Dashboards and Custom Leaderboards are Available in Output Sports Advanced Tier
Unlocking More from the Output Platform
Compete gives you everything you need to run the HCT and deliver instant Hyrox Scores. But as your testing programme grows, you may find yourself wanting more from the data. Here is what becomes possible as you move forward with Output Sports:
• Athlete dashboards – visual summaries of each athlete’s results over time, exportable as PDF reports you can hand to members or send digitally.
• Group dashboards – see trends across your entire gym or specific training groups. Identify which areas your members are improving in and where coaching focus should shift. This can be for all tests in addition to the HYROX Conditioning Test.
• Leaderboards – display real-time rankings on a projector or screen during test days. Use absolute rankings for open competition, or relative rankings to show each athlete’s improvement against their own previous scores.
• Trend tracking – overlay multiple test sessions to see clear performance trajectories. This is the data that turns a one-off test into a long-term training programme.
These features are available with Advance, the next tier in the HYROX x Output partnership. If you’re interested in learning more, visit the HYROX Performance Hub or speak to the Output Sports team – upgrading is seamless and you keep all your existing athlete data and scores.
