When using Output Sports, you can choose between two velocity-based training options:

  • AVBT - Angular Velocity-Based Training

  • VBT - Linear Velocity-Based Training

Both provide valuable insights into performance, but they differ in how and when to use them.

What is AVBT (Angular Velocity-Based Training)?

AVBT tracks angular velocity which is the speed of a limb during movement. This makes it ideal for bodyweight, unilateral, or rotational movements, where tracking linear bar speed isn't possible.

Why use AVBT?

  • Great entry point to VBT for less experienced athletes

  • Enables intent-based training in non-loaded exercises

  • Useful in rehab/return-to-play, e.g. identifying limb asymmetries

  • Applicable for jump testing, split squats, push-ups, and more

What is VBT (Linear Velocity-Based Training)?

VBT tracks linear velocity which is the straight-line speed of a barbell or implement during a lift. This method is commonly used for loaded strength and power training.

Why use VBT?

  • Allows for load prescription using velocity zones (e.g. 0.5 m/s for strength)

  • Supports daily autoregulation based on athlete readiness

  • Monitors fatigue via velocity drop-off

  • Used for load-velocity profiling and tracking progress over time
