Performance Testing Without Barbells

You can build a useful performance profile without a barbell. This is particularly valuable in functional-fitness, boutique and class-based gyms where traditional barbell velocity testing may not fit the environment.

The objective is not to recreate a laboratory or force a strength test into an unsuitable setting. It is to select simple, repeatable assessments that help coaches make better training decisions.

What can be assessed without barbells?

A no-barbell battery can examine:

  • Lower-body jump performance

  • Reactive ability

  • Selected movement ranges

  • Strength endurance

  • HYROX-specific conditioning

  • Running performance

  • Exercise-specific capacity using non-sensor inputs

These measures do not provide a complete assessment of maximal strength. Be clear about what the battery can and cannot tell you.

Recommended starter battery

Countermovement jump

Primary metric: jump height

The countermovement jump provides a practical measure of lower-body jump performance. Follow the in-app instructions and use the same movement strategy at each test.

Keep arm position consistent. Do not compare an arms-free jump with a hands-on-hips variation as if they are the same test.

Squat jump

Primary metric: jump height

The squat jump begins from a held position and reduces the contribution of a rapid countermovement. Used alongside the countermovement jump, it can add context to the athlete’s jumping profile.

Do not overinterpret the percentage difference between the two tests. Technique, starting position and familiarisation can influence the result.

10–5 test

Primary metric: Reactive Strength Index

The 10–5 test uses repeated bilateral contacts. RSI is calculated from jump height and contact time.

Give athletes clear instructions and an opportunity to practise. Reactive tests are sensitive to movement strategy; consistency matters when comparing sessions.

Mobility assessments

Choose only the assessments that are relevant to the movements you coach.

Examples may include:

  • Ankle dorsiflexion for squat, lunge and running-related movement options

  • Shoulder flexion for overhead tasks

  • Hip rotation where it is relevant to exercise execution

  • Squat range of motion

A range-of-motion result should help guide coaching and track change. It should not be used by itself to diagnose injury or predict injury.

HYROX Conditioning Test

For HYROX environments, the HCT adds sport-specific conditioning context. It combines four stations- RowErg, burpee broad jumps and reverse lunges, SkiErg and wall balls- with the athlete’s recent best 5 km time to produce the HYROX Conditioning Score and a movement-by-movement breakdown.

Follow the current Output movement standards and testing-day guidance.

Non-sensor inputs

Output can also record relevant non-sensor exercises and inputs. These may include:

  • 5 km time

  • Maximum or time-bound wall-ball performance

  • Repetitions completed

  • Duration

  • Distance

  • Weight used

Only add a measure when it informs a coaching decision. Avoid creating a battery that is long but unfocused.

A practical 20-minute profile

An example small-group profile could include:

  • Standardised warm-up

  • Selected mobility assessment

  • Countermovement jump

  • Squat jump

  • 10–5 test

  • One relevant non-sensor conditioning or strength-endurance input

  • Short result explanation

This duration is an operational example and should be tested with your available sensors, devices, staff and athletes.

Interpreting the profile

Look for patterns rather than relying on a single number.

Examples:

  • Strong jump performance with lower RSI may indicate that faster repeated contacts deserve attention

  • Lower jump scores across both CMJ and squat jump may support a broader lower-body strength-and-power priority

  • A mobility restriction may warrant technique review or a targeted intervention when it clearly affects exercise execution

  • Strong HCT stations with a weaker 5 km time may suggest running development is the clearer HYROX priority

  • A below-usual result may justify reviewing fatigue and testing conditions before changing the programme

These are coaching prompts, not automatic diagnoses.

What this battery does not measure

Without an appropriate strength assessment, do not claim that the battery directly measures maximal strength.

Jump, mobility and conditioning results should not be used alone to:

  • Diagnose injury

  • Predict injury

  • Clear an athlete for return to sport

  • Prescribe clinical treatment

  • Determine the cause of pain

  • Replace qualified coaching or healthcare judgement

Creating consistency in a class environment

For repeat testing:

  • Use the same test variations

  • Keep arm position and movement cues consistent

  • Use the same sensor placement

  • Repeat the warm-up

  • Use similar rest periods

  • Test at a similar point in the training week

  • Record relevant context

  • Compare the same primary metric

Building value for members

Members do not need to understand every available metric.

Give them:

  • One benchmark

  • One strength

  • One development priority

  • One training action

  • One date or window for review

The objective is to make the data useful and motivating, not overwhelming.
