How to Turn Athlete Testing Results Into Training Priorities

A dashboard can show where an athlete is strong or weak, but the data does not write the programme for you. The next step is to combine the result with the athlete’s goals, training history, movement quality and recent workload.

This guide provides a practical framework for turning common Output results into coaching priorities.

Start with the athlete’s goal

The same result can lead to different decisions for different athletes.

For example, a low reactive strength score may be highly relevant to an athlete whose sport involves repeated sprinting and rapid ground contacts. It may be less urgent for a beginner whose first priority is learning fundamental strength exercises safely.

Before interpreting the score, ask:

  • What is the athlete preparing for?

  • Which physical qualities are most important to that goal?

  • What is their current training age and movement competency?

  • Are they healthy and able to train normally?

  • What has their recent training looked like?

  • Is this a first test, a population comparison or a personal retest?

Use the primary metric first

Start with the primary metric associated with the exercise. Examples include jump height for a countermovement jump and RSI for the 10–5 test. Additional metrics can provide useful context, but more data does not automatically produce a better decision. Introduce secondary metrics only when they help answer the original coaching question.

Normative feedback versus personal baseline

Normative feedback helps place a first result in context by comparing it with the broader Output population for the relevant age and sex categories. A personal baseline answers a different question: “How does this performance compare with what is usual for this athlete?”

Use normative feedback to provide initial context. As repeated history becomes available, give greater weight to the athlete’s own pattern, while still considering the requirements of their sport or goal.

Example 1: Strong CMJ result and lower RSI

A countermovement jump reflects lower-body jump performance using a countermovement. The 10–5 test uses repeated contacts and reports reactive strength using jump height and contact time.

This combination may suggest that the athlete can produce a good jump but is less effective during faster repeated ground contacts.

Possible priority:

  • Develop reactive strength progressively while maintaining current lower-body power

Possible training options, selected according to the athlete’s experience:

  • Landing and low-level pogo mechanics

  • Skipping and rhythmic contacts

  • Progressively more demanding hopping or jumping exercises

  • Strength work that supports the athlete’s overall force-producing capacity

Do not progress plyometric intensity solely because of one score. The athlete must also demonstrate appropriate technique, tolerance and training experience.

Example 2: Lower CMJ and squat-jump results

When both jump measures are lower than expected, the athlete may need broader development of lower-body force and power rather than a narrow reactive-strength intervention.

Possible priority:

  • Improve foundational lower-body strength and power

Possible coaching response:

  • Review strength-training consistency and exercise technique

  • Use appropriately coached resistance exercises

  • Include low-volume explosive work that the athlete can perform well

  • Retest after a suitable training block

If barbells are available, velocity feedback can help coaches monitor intent and prescribe targets. Where they are not available, bodyweight, dumbbell, medicine-ball and jump exercises can still be tracked through Output where supported.

Example 3: Strong HCT stations and a weaker 5 km time

The HYROX Conditioning Score combines the HYROX Conditioning Test with the athlete’s recent best 5 km time. An athlete may perform strongly across the workout stations but lose overall score through the running component.

Possible priority:

  • Improve running capacity while maintaining station strengths

The training response should reflect the athlete’s experience and current programme. Avoid simply adding large amounts of running without considering recovery and total workload.

Example 4: One HCT movement is clearly weaker

The HCT provides a movement-by-movement breakdown. A relatively weak station gives the coach a clearer starting point than the overall score alone.

Possible priority:

  • Improve the limiting movement while maintaining the rest of the profile

Before programming, consider whether the score reflects:

  • Physical capacity

  • Movement technique

  • Pacing

  • Familiarity with the standard

  • Equipment setup

  • A data-entry error

For example, a wall-ball score may be influenced by squat tolerance, overhead mechanics, pacing and local muscular endurance. The number identifies where to investigate; it does not explain the cause by itself.

Example 5: A result is below the athlete’s usual range

A result below the usual range should trigger a conversation, not an immediate diagnosis.

Review:

  • Recent training load

  • Sleep and recovery

  • Soreness

  • Illness

  • Motivation and test effort

  • Warm-up

  • Technique

  • Testing conditions

If the result is unexpected, consider repeating the assessment under appropriate conditions before making a major programme change.

Example 6: A mobility result is lower than expected

Range-of-motion testing can help quantify a movement restriction and track it over time. It should not be used in isolation to diagnose an injury or predict that an athlete will become injured.

Possible priority:

  • Improve the relevant movement option where it is limiting exercise execution or comfort

The next step may include:

  • Reviewing technique

  • Selecting an appropriate mobility intervention

  • Modifying an exercise temporarily

  • Referring to a suitably qualified healthcare professional if pain or clinical concern is present

Example 7: The athlete improves but remains in the same normative category

Normative categories contain a range of results. An athlete can make meaningful personal progress without moving into a new category. Celebrate the improvement and assess whether it is relevant to the athlete’s goal. Avoid presenting category movement as the only definition of success.

A simple decision process

Use this order:

1. Confirm the result

Check the athlete, exercise, movement execution, sensor placement and data entry.

2. Check the context

Review fatigue, training, recovery, pain, familiarity and testing conditions.

3. Identify the quality

Decide which physical quality the result most directly represents.

4. Connect it to the goal

Ask whether improving that quality is likely to matter to the athlete.

5. Choose one priority

Select the smallest useful programme change.

6. Decide how progress will be monitored

Choose the metric, testing conditions and approximate review point before starting the intervention.

Communicating the result

A useful athlete explanation is short:

“Your repeated-jump score is currently lower than your countermovement-jump result would lead us to expect. For the next block, we will maintain your strength work and gradually develop your ability to produce force through quicker ground contacts. We will repeat the same tests under similar conditions at the end of the block.”
