From Testing to Training: A Practical Six-Week Test–Retest Framework

Testing is most useful when it leads to a clear coaching decision. A result collected once can describe where an athlete is today, but a repeatable process allows you to evaluate whether training is producing the intended change.

This guide provides a practical six-week framework for advanced testing. It can be adapted to suit the athlete, the training programme and the demands of your environment. If you are running the full HYROX Conditioning Test, follow the current Output recommendation to schedule full HCT retests every 8-12 weeks.

Before you begin

Choose a small number of tests that answer a specific question. Avoid collecting a large set of measures simply because they are available.

A useful testing battery may examine:

  • Lower-body power using a countermovement jump

  • Reactive ability using the 10–5 test

  • Concentric force-producing ability using a squat jump

  • Relevant joint range of motion using selected mobility assessments

  • Strength qualities using barbell-velocity exercises where barbells and suitable coaching are available

  • HYROX-specific conditioning using the HYROX Conditioning Test

Not every athlete needs every test. Select assessments that are appropriate for their experience, programme and goals.

Step 1: Define the question

Begin with the decision you want the test to inform.

Examples include:

  • Has the athlete’s lower-body power improved?

  • Is the athlete becoming more reactive?

  • Is a mobility restriction affecting how efficiently they complete a movement?

  • Has the athlete improved the weakest component of their HYROX Conditioning Score?

  • Is the current strength programme producing the intended velocity response?

Write down the question before choosing the test. This reduces unnecessary data collection and makes the result easier to explain.

Step 2: Standardise the testing conditions

Comparisons are more useful when testing conditions are kept as consistent as reasonably possible.

Where practical, repeat:

  • The same exercise and exercise variation

  • The same movement instructions

  • The same sensor placement

  • The same warm-up

  • The same number of attempts

  • Similar rest periods

  • The same primary metric

  • A similar point in the training week

  • Similar footwear, surface and equipment

Recent training, fatigue, soreness, motivation and familiarity with the test can all influence performance. Record relevant context rather than treating every change as a training effect.

Step 3: Establish the starting point

Run the selected battery and record the results in Output. For non-VBT exercises with sufficient population data, the post-set review screen can initially show normative feedback based on the athlete’s age and sex. Normative information answers: “How does this result compare with a wider reference population?”

It does not automatically answer:

  • Why the athlete achieved that result

  • Whether the result is good for their sport or role

  • Whether the athlete is fatigued

  • Which exercise will improve the score

  • Whether a small difference is a meaningful change

Use the result as one part of the coaching picture alongside training history, technique and the athlete’s goals.

Step 4: Select one or two training priorities

The purpose of testing is not to produce the longest possible report. Give the athlete one or two priorities they can understand and act on.

For example:

  • Improve reactive ability while maintaining current jump performance

  • Develop lower-body strength while retaining movement quality

  • Prioritise running development while maintaining strong HCT station performance

  • Improve wall-ball capacity before the next HCT

  • Restore normal performance after a period of high training load

Avoid changing the whole programme because of one isolated score.

Step 5: Train and monitor

Across the following weeks, deliver the training intended to influence the selected quality. Monitor the athlete through normal coaching observations and, where appropriate, lower-burden checks.

A practical six-week structure could look like this:

Week 1: Test and set priorities

Complete the testing battery, review the scores and agree one or two priorities.

Weeks 2–3: Train the priority

Deliver the relevant training consistently. Avoid repeatedly maximal-testing the athlete simply to generate more data.

Week 4: Complete a low-burden check

Use a short, familiar assessment or review recent training data. The purpose is to check direction, not to recreate the full testing day.

Week 5: Continue or adjust

Continue the plan if the athlete is progressing and tolerating the training. Adjust only when results, coaching observations and athlete feedback collectively suggest a change is required.

Week 6: Retest

Repeat the original tests under similar conditions. Compare the same exercises and primary metrics.

This is a planning example, not a universal rule. Some qualities and athlete populations may require a longer period before a meaningful training adaptation should be expected.

Step 6: Interpret the retest

Ask four questions:

  • Did the primary result improve, decline or remain broadly stable?

  • Were the testing conditions sufficiently similar?

  • Does the result agree with recent training and coaching observations?

  • Does the result justify changing the programme?

Once an athlete has completed an eligible exercise on three distinct calendar days within the previous six weeks, Output can build a personal baseline. The review screen then compares the result with the athlete’s usual range.

A result above the usual range may indicate a positive performance on the day. A result within the usual range suggests performance is consistent with the athlete’s recent pattern. A result below the usual range is a prompt to investigate context; it is not a diagnosis.

Step 7: Close the feedback loop

Give the athlete a short explanation:

  • What changed

  • What may have contributed

  • What will remain the same

  • What will change next

  • When you will review progress again

Where available, use athlete dashboards, group dashboards, PDF exports or leaderboards to make progress visible.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Changing exercises between the first test and retest

  • Comparing different metrics as if they measure the same quality

  • Retesting after an unusually demanding session

  • Treating a single result as proof of fatigue, readiness or injury risk

  • Testing too many qualities without a clear decision attached

  • Comparing athletes without considering age, sex, experience, body mass or training background

  • Chasing a better test score without considering whether it matters to the athlete’s goal
